Engineering a Hybrid Rotary Interface for 12G-SDI Video and Electrical Circuits

A hybrid rotary interface has to solve two different problems at the same time. Power and control circuits must remain electrically stable during rotation, while the high-frequency video path must preserve the characteristics required by the transmitter and receiver. Successful integration comes from treating the assembly as a system rather than as a collection of unrelated contacts.

LPT000-0405-06S-HF01 provides a practical reference. The confirmed project description includes one integrated high-frequency path capable of 12G-SDI transmission and a radial stator-side cable exit. The product was associated with a radar-antenna application. Exact circuit ratings and operating conditions remain configuration-specific.

The rotary interface is part of the transmission line

At high data rates, every connector, cable transition and conductive path becomes part of the signal channel. Small impedance discontinuities can create reflections. Cable loss accumulates across the fixed and rotating sides, and poorly controlled shield termination can increase susceptibility to interference.

For this reason, a useful design review should map the path from source to receiver. The drawing should identify cable types, lengths, connectors, adapters and the rotary interface. Engineers can then define a representative test assembly instead of evaluating the slip ring in isolation.

Specify measurable acceptance criteria

The acceptance plan should state the video format and test conditions. Depending on the project, the team may review link operation, error behavior and relevant high-frequency measurements. The supplier and system integrator should agree on the test setup before production so that both sides interpret the result in the same way.

Do not replace acceptance criteria with broad phrases such as stable transmission. A defined source, receiver, cable set and rotation condition gives the statement engineering meaning.

Coordinate the power and signal architecture

Electrical circuits inside the same housing can carry different voltage and current levels. Document each circuit and define insulation, grounding and shielding requirements. Sensitive control paths should not be treated as interchangeable with power circuits simply because their current is lower.

The mechanical design also affects electrical performance. Cable exits, connector orientation and available bend radius influence how installers route the high-frequency cable. The radial stator exit on this project can be useful where axial space is constrained, but the final assembly must preserve cable geometry and service access.

Design for production repeatability

A prototype that works once is not yet a production solution. The approved package should define the circuit schedule, cable part numbers, connector part numbers, workmanship controls and inspection records. If the customer supplies cables or connectors, responsibilities should be explicit.

Change control is especially important for the video path. Replacing a cable with a visually similar part can alter the channel. The drawing and bill of materials should make critical high-frequency components traceable.

Use application evidence carefully

The radar-antenna reference shows the intended engineering context, but it does not prove suitability for every radar, camera or broadcast system. New projects may have different speeds, cable lengths, environments and receivers. Use the product as a starting architecture, then validate the actual system.

A technically credible specification states what was tested and under which conditions. That approach supports global OEM teams because it replaces assumptions with a shared, reviewable definition of the rotary link.
